My day with Jon Kabat-Zinn
This week I had the privilege of participating in an event led by the illustrious Jon Kabat-Zinn, the man credited with bringing secular mindfulness to the Western world through Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.
The event was entitled “Mindfulness-Based Interventions from the Inside: A Day-Long Laboratory of Practice, Inquiry and Fine-Tuning” and the audience was comprised of experienced mindfulness teachers and others with a deep practice.
He was passionate, challenging, thought-provoking and inspiring.
I am still digesting the wealth of wisdom he shared so generously. It will take some time to fully allow it all to settle and I feel certain that this wisdom will positively influence my teaching - and life - from here on.
However, even as I write this, I can hear Jon's words ringing in my ears ...
"Don't rely on the authority of others - rely on your own, LIFE is the only authority."
To help Jon’s wisdom ripple out even more widely, I would like to share some (of the many) quotes which resonated most strongly for me:
"Let your practice inform you how to be in a relationship with whatever’s here.”
“Live a life of integrity – the best you can do is to be you.”
“LIFE is your meditation teacher … and the curriculum is whatever is right here and now”
“The mind can be untrustworthy … but the heart is almost always trustworthy.”
“Be real, be kind.”
“Learn how to inhabit each moment.”
I would be very interested to hear which of these quotes resonates most strongly for you, and why - please do share your thoughts.
